At Ascensions we practice
a “therapy without walls” approach in which we see no boundaries in providing the best psychological care
possible. This means that we provide a variety of services not just to children and adults suffering from
serious emotional, behavioral and/or mental disorders, but to their entire family unit; we believe that payment should
never be a barrier to healthy functioning and offer our services free of charge to all individuals in need; and we
deliver our services in a variety of settings including, our Anacostia-based office, local public schools, workplaces,
churches and other community agencies.
Aside from the traditional family therapy that all clients receive, our therapists also provide children and
their parents with a number of services vital to healthy functioning including: individual therapy
for issues that require focus outside of the family unit; therapeutic groups to facilitate peer learning
and psychoeducation on topics including surviving the homicide of a loved one, maintaining healthy marriages, and self-esteem/resilience;
parenting education/support/therapy groups; clinical evaluations to assess if other community
services and referrals are needed (such as special education, rehabilitation, and/or medication); home structuring
visits to assist with developing house rules, consequences and reward; parenting classes to teach alternatives to
physical discipline, and school based interventions, which include the participation of Ascensions’
staff in Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings, classroom management, suspension re-instatement planning, and behavior
modification assistance.
